A competitive compensation package is being offered, including a base salary between $70,000 - $90,000 plus additional generous benefits.

Overview Requirements & Qualifications. The ideal candidate for the position of Assistant Chief of Police will possess a minimum of 10 years of progressively increasing responsibility within law enforcement, including extensive law enforcement experience, related to executive management of an airport police department. Must have knowledge of TSRs specific to 49 C.F.R. 1542 and Part 139 Airport certification. The candidate will have a four year college degree in Criminal Justice or Public Administration. The candidate for this position will have extensive investigative skills as well as the ability to train subordinates in this skillset. The candidate must have airport operations experience and be familiar with the day-to-day operations of an airport. As a requirement, the candidate selected will become certified as a Police Chief within the State of Georgia and be willing to undergo 6-8 weeks of Police Chief training within their first six months of employment. The ideal candidate will have prior experience as an Airport Security Coordinator, Assistant Chief of Police, or Chief of Police, and will have a strong desire to advance into the role of Chief of Police at SAV in the near future.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Chief of Police for the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport reports to the Chief of Police and will be assigned the following duties and responsibilities:
Position Summary: Oversees the administrative duties of the Airport Public Safety Department (APSD), including managing the schedules of police officers and dispatchers, and having day-to-day responsibilities for the APSD.
Oversee APSD employees to plan and supervise work to ensure public safety assignments are carried out properly.
Instruct, give guidance, and advise public safety officers on law enforcement and public safety duties.
Engage passengers and tenants in a professional manner.
Perform employee performance evaluations and notify the Executive Director about any employee issues that require corrective action.
Keep supervisors informed concerning operational matters and concerns.
Serve as the designated Airport Security Coordinator related to the adjudication of criminal history record checks and security threat assessments.
Respond and set up incident command to emergencies specified in the Airport Emergency Plan. This includes reporting to the scene of an Airport emergency and providing incident command as it relates to the duties of the APSD specified in the Airport Emergency Plan.
Oversee and direct the enforcement of laws and regulations to comply with Federal, state, and local ordinances.
Oversee the protection and service of all persons and property within the jurisdiction of the Airport.
Plan, organize, administer, and review the work of sworn and non-sworn staff through direct and subordinate levels of supervision.
Develop and direct the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for the department.
Assist supervisor with the preparation and administration of the department’s budget for the fiscal year.
Oversee and develop an informative roll call briefing to ensure patrol officers are made aware of recent events and incidents.
Oversee departmental police functions including uniformed patrols, crime prevention, traffic enforcement, and dispatchers.
Interact with Federal, regional, state, and local law enforcement agencies to receive and gather intelligence information with ongoing investigations.
Oversee the explosive detection canine program.
Develop positive and professional relationships with other staff and departments.
Additional Functional Duties
Serve as a member of the Airport’s Hurricane Ride Out Team and coordinate efforts with the Southeast Airport Disaster Operations Group and Chatham Emergency Management Agency.
Work cooperatively with the TSA, FBI, and CBP in developing programs and implementing projects to maximize service to safeguard the traveling public.
Develop efficient policing methodologies to meet the changing dynamics of law enforcement through situational awareness and improving the overall effectiveness of the department.

Must be able to drive a car, small truck, or 4-wheel drive vehicle.
Must be able to climb stairs, walk long distances, and stand for extended periods of time.
Must be able to conduct briefings as well as communicate using a two-way radio system and the telephone.
Must have hearing ability to detect noises, sirens, and emergency radio transmissions.
Must have 20/20 vision with corrected lens.
Must be able to meet and maintain TSA requirements authorizing unescorted access entry to SIDA.

The Airport sits on 3,600 acres of property which includes over 15 hotels, several restaurants, and business tenants. Our largest tenant, Gulfstream produces and tests aircraft and operates a large Research and Development facility. The Airport Police Department patrols all 3,600 acres and has numerous vehicles available for this purpose. There are two canine police handlers who maintain explosive-detection canines. The Airport Police Department is comprised of 23 officers who rotate 12-hour shifts on a monthly shift change.

Salary and Compensation
Salaries are competitive with surrounding police jurisdictions. The Savannah Airport Commission benefits are excellent and include a retirement plan. Specifically, a competitive compensation package is being offered, including a base salary between $70,000 - $90,000 plus additional benefits, including: medical/dental/vision insurance and pharmacy/medicine coverage, as well as pension contributions and 457B Retirement Plan contributions, holidays and PTO, yearly COLA and merit salary increases, and basic life insurance, among others.
