Performs the duties of the Airport Fire Chief as pertaining to State, Federal, and Airport Regulations. Supervise the administration of all activities of the Fire Department. Reviews operations, fire and safety procedures, inspections and reports. Monitors, inspects, provides direction and makes overall recommendations regarding employee safety, tenant safety and general public safety throughout the Airport. Performs routine staff functions and acts as the Senior Fire Officer specified in the Airport Emergency Plan. Performs other duties assigned by the Senior VP & Chief Operating Officer.
Responsible for insuring that all functions of the Fire Department are coordinated and in compliance with State, Federal, and Airport Regulations.
Ensure implementation of ARFF procedures in accordance with FAR 139.
Maintains a working relationship with mutual-aid fire departments, EMS and other supporting emergency agencies.
Review records and set up controls and procedures to insure effective public safety operations.
Review daily activity reports and incident reports. Take corrective action as required.
Responsible for the overall safety of the airport.
Ensure that all Fire Department personnel are properly trained in their respective fields
Receive and investigate complaints from the public, tenants, and other personnel concerning public safety.
Ensure all areas of the airport are inspected for fire/safety issues.
Review drawings and specifications for airport construction projects to ensure compliance with International Building and Fire Safety codes.
Prepare and manage operating budget for Fire Department.
Ensure NIMS is implemented during major incidents at the airport.
Review annually the Airport Safety Polices and Procedure Manual and assist department heads in maintaining safety policies in accordance with all applicable regulations and industry best practices.
Ensure Airport fueling agents are inspected on quarterly basis and records maintained.
On call in the event of emergencies.
Assist the Director of Facilities with Spill Prevention and Counter Measure Plan.
Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Business Administration or related field.
This position requires a minimum of ten (10) years of progressive firefighting experience in an organized fire department, including at least five (5) years of officer level / supervisory experience with ARFF services at an airport, municipality, or military fire department.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge in the operations and safety of a Certificated Airport as required by FAR Part 139
ARFF and fire ground operations
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency in the use of a personal computer is necessary, including skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Windows
This position requires skills in prioritization, organization, verbal communications and interpersonal relations, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Supervise all levels of fire and operations personnel
Valid South Carolina Driver’s License Class E or CDL Class B, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
IFSAC Firefighter 2 – or equivalent training and experience
IFSAC Aircraft Rescue Firefighter –or equivalent training and experience
IFSAC Hazardous Material Operation Level-or equivalent training
Fire Management –or equivalent training and experience
I-400 Advanced ICS
South Carolina Fire Marshal Certification or ability to obtain within 12 months
Diligence must be exercised when handling confidential information.
Reasonable care for equipment/process will prevent injury/damage.
Responsible for own work, but must coordinate work with others.
Physical Demand - Use of personal protective equipment is required. May be exposed to heat, cold, rain, snow and a noisy work environment.
Mental and/or Visual Demand - Mental and visual demands are high and vary with function performed. Consistent mental attention needed to respond safely and efficiently.
Attentiveness to work procedure will reduce potential risk of injury in work areas.
Exposed to normal fire service and aviation environment.
Will be subject to recall after normal duty hours.
Must be able to complete and pass a background investigation and drug screen as required by the Federal Government and aviation-related authorities.
