Serving as a member of the Aviation Senior Management Team, the Director of Airport Operations provides vision and proactive efforts to ensure a safe, secure, sustainable, customer-friendly and efficient facility for the traveling public and the region. The Port is seeking an innovative, forward thinking Director of Airport Operations who will be a champion for the future, manage change, and demonstrate flexibility and creativity in problem solving.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Responsible for aeronautical and non-aeronautical operations encompassing the air cargo, airfield, passenger air terminal and landside lines of business.
Provides leadership and direction to the Airport Communications Center, Operational Readiness Activation and Transition (ORAT), and coordinating the majority of capital improvement projects.
Maintains the Airport’s Federal Aviation Administration Operating Certificate and the operational integrity of the facility.
Ensures the airport is operating according to federal, state and local laws and regulations to ensure public safety and security.
Establishes sound operating policies and procedures that will ensure responsible, safe, and efficient operations.
Establishes department’s priorities, identifies future needs, and directs the strategic initiatives and aviation priorities to meet those needs.
Creates and sustains cooperative working relationships with all stakeholders including airport customers, tenants, businesses, and the public.
Serves as one of the principal liaison to airlines, FAA, TSA, CBP, cruise lines, and ground transportation providers.
Develops and manages an annual operating budget of approximately $40 million and annual revenues of approximately $300 million. Also, coordinates with the capital improvement program team to implement a portfolio of projects in excess of $3.7 billion.
Fosters and sustains a culture that is conducive to outstanding employee engagement, productivity and excellence in customer service.
Represents the interests of the Port of Seattle in industry, community, technical, educational and trade affiliations.
Provides leadership and strategic direction to the Aviation Operations Department including employee engagement, performance management, development and training.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Have a strong track record building effective teams and fostering a culture of engagement. Have demonstrated familiarity with implementation of agreements, problem-solving, and working effectively with labor unions. Have a breadth of knowledge on a wide variety of airport operations subjects including airfield, terminal, and landside operations. Have a strong understanding of organized labor structures, collective bargaining agreements and administration of these agreements.
Be able to develop, manage, and direct senior level leaders and the work of assigned departments, complex programs and functional areas. An experienced leader, this person will be able to effectively and appropriately delegate as needed. Be able to influence and lead innovation and change throughout the organization, as well as prioritize and communicate key objectives and tactics necessary to achieve organizational goals. Be able to quickly identify and respond to organizational issues, concerns and needs.
Have the ability to engage and inspire employees, providing clarity of purpose and direction. Have highly effective leadership skills, including the ability to provide coaching and direction to staff. Be able to use well-developed negotiation skills, as well as written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking, to persuade others to adopt new processes, methodologies, or ways of thinking. Be able to make sound decisions in a rapidly changing environment. Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal Port staff, customers, external partners, community groups and local and federal government officials.
QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered for this position, candidates must possess a combination of education and experience demonstrating knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:
Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management, Business, Transportation, Public administration or related field.
Ten years of increasingly responsible experience in a medium to large hub commercial service airport.
Five years in a leadership role developing and implementing strategies, goals and objectives.
Master’s degree in Aviation Management, Business Administration or Public Administration, transportation field, or related degree.
Experience in airfield operations for a medium to large hub airport.
Direct experience working with labor-represented and non-represented workforces to achieve business goals.
