Austin City Council adopted six Strategic Outcomes and Indicators in 2018 as part of its Strategic Direction 2023 in improve quality of life and civic participation in the Austin community over the next three to five years. The Airport Chief Development Officer reports to the AUS Chief Executive Officer who reports to an Assistant City Manager, who oversees the Mobility Strategic Outcome. The Airport Chief Development Officer will be responsible for supporting department programs and initiatives as it relates to the Strategic Outcomes. This position operates with a high level of autonomy, and is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction for the development, planning and engineering, capital improvement, environmental, and sustainability functions of AUS. Direct the implementation of the Airport’s Capital Development Program (CDP) and Master Plan.
Serves as the primary executive manager and negotiator between AUS and the architectural, engineering, environmental, legal and contracting community.
Leads partnership activities with a wide range of stakeholders and ensure appropriate level of engagement with AUS divisions, AUS business partners, regulatory agencies, and City of Austin departments through the life cycle of a capital project.
Works closely with the FAA in capturing federal Airport Improvement Program funding and compliance with that grant program.
Oversees the development and maintenance of the Airport Layout Plan (ALP) to ensure compliance with all federal regulations and policies.
Manages the Airport Master Plan including processing updates as needed, and for any work related to compliance with the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA).
Responsible for compliance with and management of environmental regulations, including the Airport’s Storm Water Pollution and Prevention Plan, working with AUS tenant co-permittees to ensure compliance with the plan.
Ensures effective coordination and communication with Airport tenants, other City of Austin departments, neighborhood associations, the general public, media, consultants, public agencies, or private sector representatives.
Represents AUS interests in policy, aviation, technical, and with governmental/regulatory agencies, boards, councils, commissions, and oversight bodies.

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate shall think strategically and have experience in enhancing a service-oriented work environment while planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating the performance of assigned team members; establishing performance requirements and personal development targets, and providing coaching to enhance performance and continuous development of teams. Candidates should have a proven track record of building strong, collaborative relationships with stakeholders of all kinds, including residents, businesses, elected officials, and other professional staff. Candidates should also be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and have the capacity to drive forward with high priority initiatives while managing daily workload. The next Chief Development Officer will need to be a confident decision maker with a track record of producing results, an effective and empathic communicator skilled at building relationships, and a collaborative partner with stakeholders.
Because of the extent of the upcoming capital projects program, it is desirable that candidates have experience in a leadership role in large-scale capital programs. Experience should include preparing requests for proposals, selection of design-builders, managing contracts, achieving performance metrics, and extensive stakeholder engagement in different project delivery models is highly desirable.
Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public or Business Administration, Aviation Management, Finance, Engineering, or in a field related to the job, plus at least eight (8) years of senior-level experience at airports, airlines, or comparable organizations, including six (6) years of experience which were in a managerial or executive capacity.
Graduation with a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience up to a maximum of two (2) years.
