Oversee and manager the operation of the newly reorganized Aviation Services Section. This section will include: • The Air Transport Unit which provides air transportation services to state employees utilizing a variety of aircraft and seven employees including two supervisors. • The Electronic Facilities and unmanned aerial system unit which provides a variety of specialized services to airports and MDOT staff including maintenance and installation of weather stations and navigational aids and also provides guidance, training, and oversight to MDOT’s Unmanned Aerial Systems deployment and is served by three employees including a supervisor. This position will also lead MDOT’s effort to integrate unmanned aircraft systems into the Michigan airspace system supported by the operational expertise contained with the Electronic Facilities team and other MDOT experts.
Required Education and Experience
Education Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.
Experience Five years of professional experience as an aviation specialist, airplane pilot, air traffic controller, certified flight instructor, airport manager, aviation consultant, or professional experience equivalent to aviation safety, training, education, inspection or airport planning; three years of professional experience equivalent to an Aviation Specialist 12; two years equivalent to an Aviation Manager 13; or, one year equivalent to an Aviation Manager 14 or supervising aviation specialists, airplane pilots, air traffic controllers, certified flight instructors, aviation consultants, or equivalent professional supervisory experience in aviation safety, training, education, inspection or airport planning.
Alternate Education and Experience
Four years of full-time experience as a certified flight instructor, airport manager, aviation consultant, airplane pilot, or air traffic controller; or, experience equivalent to aviation safety, training, education and inspection, or airport planning may be substituted for the education (bachelor's degree) requirement. This is in addition to the experience requirements.
Additional Requirements and Information
Completion of 750 hours of flying time, 100 hours of which must have been in the last two years.
Possession of a current pilot’s license.
At MDOT, positions that function as an inspection manager only do not require a current pilot’s license or completion of flying time. The position is considered a first-line manager of a standard work area as an Aviation Manager 13.
