Bangor, the Queen City of Maine, is located on the western bank of the Penobscot River. Bangor was known as the “lumber capital of the world” for much of the 19th century. Being the third-largest city in Maine, with a population of about 34,000, Bangor is the major commercial and cultural center for eastern and northern Maine. Rich in history and culture, and offering abundant outdoor activities, Bangor is just nine miles from the University of Maine, and home to author Stephen King. It is renowned for its outstanding examples of 19th-century architecture, as well as a center for sports and recreation in the state, including the Senior League World Series. Visit our downtown area for and abundance of restaurants, shopping breweries and of course Arts and Entertainment. Bangor’s new Cross Insurance Center features a new arena for sports and entertainment events, and a new conference center for meetings, conventions, and expositions. Bangor is close to several of Maine’s outstanding outdoor recreation areas, including Acadia National Park, Baxter State Park, Mount Katahdin, and Sugarloaf Ski Resort.
