The Portland International Jetport is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Aviation Safety Officer. The Aviation Safety Officer works under the general direction of the Airport Director, with an additional supervisory relationship to the City of Portland’s Director of Occupational Health & Safety. This position develops, implements,and manages the Airport Safety Management System (SMS) in accordance with Federal Guidance and best industry practice. This position exercises significant discretion and independent judgment in creating and administering the Jetport’s safety program. Activities are performed with considerable personal initiative and independence. This position also leads the Jetports Safety and Accident Review Committee. Successful candidates will have excellent training skills, demonstrated capacity to work collaboratively, and demonstrate excellent communication skills. Preference will be given to applicants who have prior experience implementing and overseeing Airport Safety Management Systems and prior experience implementing and overseeing OSHA/BLS Standards.
Knowledge of the hazards of work, safe work practices, and OSHA regulations and other applicable federal, state and local health and safety standards in multiple industry sectors. Knowledge of the Maine Workers’ Compensation System.Knowledge of the methods and techniques of effective employee safety and training development. Ability to conduct accident investigations or building inspections in physically challenging environments, including potentially hazardous areas, inclement weather, etc. Substantial experience in offering a broad range of trainings. Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills. Competency using computers and demonstrated ability to learn Google Productivity Tools such as Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Slides. Ability to do research and develop solutions to complex problems. Degree in aviation management with a focus on Safety Management Systems, or equivalent experience. Experience offering training to a diverse workforce. Prior experience at a medium or small hub part 139 commercial airport in operations, construction, or maintenance. Must possess a valid Maine Class C driver's license or the ability to obtain one within six months.Must have and maintain a good driving record. Willingness to work extended hours during emergency operations for accident response and investigations. Successful completion of TSA Criminal Background Check in accordance with TSR Part 1542 to acquire and maintain an airport security badge.
