The City of Paso Robles is excited to announce the recruitment for an Airport Maintenance Specialist III in the Public Works Department! The Airport Maintenance Specialist III is responsible for performing lead-level work that involves the training, mentoring, and coordination of division staff while executing journey-level work in the maintenance, repair, and operation of the City’s non-towered general aviation municipal airport. Under the direction of the Airport Manager, the Airport Maintenance Specialist III will also assist in the coordination of airfield inspections and perform a wide variety of work revolving around critical maintenance tasks and emergency response for the Paso Robles Airport.

Typical Duties
Perform a wide variety of work in support of the daily operation, maintenance, and emergency response of the Paso Robles Airport
Perform airfield maintenance and inspections to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards and specifications including but not limited to maintenance of airfield lighting systems, airfield markings, hangars, surface preparation and repair, beacons, tie-downs, and chains
Monitor, direct, and review the work of crews performing construction, maintenance, and repair assignments
Operate and maintain a variety of equipment such as mowers, tractors, street sweepers, and hand tools
Perform advanced repairs and preventative maintenance of the airport terminal and other facilities
Perform landscape maintenance on airport grounds including but not limited to planting, transplanting, and maintaining trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns; installing and maintaining irrigation systems; fertilizing and applying herbicides and pesticides; and maintaining landscaped areas around buildings, airfields, and along roadways
Coordinate and monitor various onsite activities with fixed-based operators, hangar owners and renters, tenants, the FAA, and the general public
Maintain a variety of records on projects, materials, and equipment; prepare narrative and statistical reports as needed by management
Maintain an understanding of and compliance with federal, state, and local aviation rules and regulations
Respond promptly and professionally to aircraft incidents and monitor airfield security
Perform routine janitorial duties of public restrooms and meeting rooms
Provide excellent customer service to tenants, contractors, and the public; escort visitors as needed
Assist with compliance of the City's Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (SWPPP)
Establish a safe work area and coordinate activities with employees and the public, as safety rules require
Coordinate and provide for facility usage to ensure successful City activities
May coordinate and review the work of contract staff required for airport maintenance assignments
Assist the Airport Manager with the oversight of major contract repair or maintenance of facilities and equipment
Interact with the public to answer questions, explain applicable laws, rules, and regulations, and investigate complaints
Determine the type of materials, supplies, machinery, or tools to be used for each project; may purchase materials and supplies from established suppliers with appropriate authorization
Perform other duties as assigned

The City was incorporated in 1889 as a general law City that operates under the Council-Manager form of government with a general population of 30,907 as of January 1, 2024. The governing body consists of a five-member City Council and, beginning in 2020, the City is now divided into four voting districts, each district represented by one City Councilmember residing in that district; the Mayor’s position remains at-large. The voters also elect one City Treasurer at-large. All six elected positions are non-partisan. The City Manager, appointed by the City Council, is the Chief Executive Officer, and is empowered to appoint all non-elected employees, except for the City Attorney.
The City has a total annual budget of $170 million for fiscal year 2024/2025, and a total of 304.4 FTEs across the departments of: Administrative Services, City Manager’s Office, Community Development, Community Services, Fire and Emergency Services, Police, Public Works, and Utilities.
