The City of Bangor has an incredible opportunity for the right candidate interested in making a difference at the Bangor International Airport, as the Environmental and Safety Specialist. This position works under the direction of the City’s Risk & Safety Manager, and provides knowledge, skills and experience to effectively implement and coordinate the City’s and Airport’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) programs in accordance with all applicable Federal and State regulations. The Airport Environmental & Safety Specialist will identify and evaluate occupational hazards and environmental risks throughout the airport’s facilities and work closely with supervisors, managers and other personnel in an advisory role providing sound technical advice to ensure a safe, compliant and environmentally responsible work environment. This position will act as an advisory liaison bringing environmental, health and safety issues to the attention of the airport’s senior management and the City’s Risk & Safety Manager.
Must possess thorough knowledge and familiarity with OSHA, NFPA, Maine DEP, EPA, and DOT regulations or standards.
Able to schedule, create, present and track required environmental, health and safety training for City personnel
Able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
Able to manage and coordinate multifaceted environmental health and safety projects with varying divisions, personnel, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders to ensure a safe work environment and regulatory compliance.
Able to remain calm, and maintain professionalism, and provide support in stressful or emergent situations.
High degree of self-motivation, well organized with an attention to detail, and ability to work independently or in a team environment.
Able to quickly acquire a working knowledge of airport divisions and operations. High level of interpersonal communication skills and ability to express self orally and in writing. Must be able to work effectively with employees at all levels, including giving and receiving feedback with City and airport leadership to build and maintain partnerships.
Able to motivate others by effective communications and encouragement with a confident leadership ability.
Able to think strategically, problem solve independently and implement changes at the operational level.
Possess the ability to identify safety or environmental issues, conduct research, and develop and propose solutions.
Use of personal protective equipment when needed including, but not limited to: hearing protection, eye protection, respiratory protection, safety-toed boots, hardhat, & gloves.
Able to create and maintain a well-organized record keeping system for the airport’s EH&S documents and training records.
Thorough knowledge of standard computing systems (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.), telephones, and standard office equipment.
Ability to work a flexible schedule and to respond to emergencies, understanding the airport is operated 24/7.
Preferred - Bachelor Degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or other closely-related field with a minimum of 3 years of experience in an Environmental Health and Safety field; or Preferred - an Associate Degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or other closely-related field with a minimum of 5+ years of experience in Environmental Health and Safety field; Consideration given for candidates without the preferred education with equivalent or similar experience in a related field or industry. Direct experience in a municipality or airport setting working in the field of Environmental, Health, and Safety is a plus.
